Supporting Organizations:
Associated Student Government:
"Associated Student Government believes in a Fossil Free NU because we believe that our campus' growing sustainable practices should be mirrored in how we invest. The specter of climate change is unquestioned here at Northwestern, as we understand that climate change is real and requires action. Fossil Free NU matters because time is running out when we still have actions left to take to reduce carbon emissions."
ASG Sustainability Committee:
"The ASG Sustainability Committee is proud to endorse Fossil Free NU. We've dedicated many hours to making Northwestern a leader in sustainability, but by investing in fossil fuels, Northwestern undercuts the dedication of student groups like ours, and its own goals of addressing climate change proactively. Northwestern has a moral and fiscal responsibility to make sure our investments align with our values, and for that reason we urge the administration and Board of Trustees to take action by divesting from fossil fuels."
Eco-Reps:
"Eco-Reps supports divestment from fossil fuels because we believe in using cleaner energy sources instead of coal and oil. We want to keep our environment as healthy as possible for ourselves and for the generations that will come after us. The Earth is the only planet we have, so the least we can do is to take good care of it. That means using energy sources--and investing in energy sources-- that will not lead to drastic changes in the environment that we all are a part of."
Engineers for a Sustainable World:
"Engineers for a Sustainable World Northwestern Chapter (ESW NU) is endorsing Fossil Free NU because ESW also believes in divesting from Fossil Fuels and investing in cleaner energy resources. ESW NU is currently working on ways to incorporate clean energy on the Evanston campus in many ways. This includes building a solar powered charging station, forming an educational interface to track campus wind data, and designing a solar array contributing to The Ford Design Center's daily energy consumption. Northwestern administration and student body have been extremely supportive of these efforts and have monetarily contributed to making these projects happen. The investments of Northwestern should reflect these contributions and ESW's hard work. For these reasons, ESW NU endorses Fossil Free NU. In the words of Bill McKibben, “When you are in a hole, stop digging!” "
GREEN House:
"GREEN House supports Fossil Free NU's campaign because we are a group of residents who are environmentally engaged and understand that the time has come to take action on climate change. GREEN House is in support of Northwestern's need to become a leader in saving our planet and believes that the first step is to divest from coal."
Northwestern Energy and Sustainability Consortium:
"As a consortium of students committed to environmental sustainability and energy innovation, NESC supports Fossil Free NU. It is our mission to expand and develop Northwestern’s commitment to leadership in energy and sustainability. Through divestment from coal, Northwestern can take the lead in creating the political space for progress in energy policy, driving the paradigm shift necessary for a cleaner energy future. Here on campus, NESC believes the Fossil Free NU campaign will promote student interest and involvement in this important issue, as well as bring it to the attention of existing student groups committed to sustainability."
The Northwestern Sustainability Fund:
"The Northwestern Sustainability Fund is a proud supporter of the Fossil Free movement. Over the course of this year, the Sustainability Fund has had the opportunity to fund several of Fossil Free NU's events, and we have been ecstatic to see the attention they've received from the Northwestern community. The creation of the sustainability fund demonstrated Northwestern's willingness to invest in sustainability efforts, but it is not enough. Divestment from coal would help propel Northwestern forward and place it among the national leaders in sustainability."
The Office of Sustainability:
"NU’s Office of Sustainability believes that the University’s investments should reflect its Strategic Plan which states that NU will “Contribute to the solutions for renewable energy and a sustainable environment and to how public policies and economic incentives promote implementation of new technologies and practices." Divestment from coal and fossil fuels-- energy sources that have been proven scientifically to harm the environment-- and focused re-investment in renewable technologies are important steps in support of the mission of the University."
Real Food at Northwestern University (NURF):
"NURF believes that divestment from fossil fuels is one of the first steps in achieving a more sustainable Northwestern and world. Climate justice and food justice are both puzzle pieces in creating the same image of a greener future. We are proud to have worked with our fellow environmental activists at FFNU in taking that first step."
Students for Ecological and Environmental Development:
"SEED is an organization dedicated to environmental education and activism at Northwestern. We are committed to engaging Northwestern students, staff, administration, and faculty in sustainability. Therefore, we wholeheartedly support the efforts of Fossil Free NU. Fossil Free NU’s mission of coal divestment is highly aligned with SEED’s as it encourages positive action to reduce the usage of fossil fuels and educate our community on the dangers of coal-based energy production. Achieving divestment would send a message to the world that fossil fuels are not the answer to our energy needs and we should be investing in a future based on renewable, clean energy technology."
Wild Roots:
"Wild Roots believes Fossil Free NU is doing critical work to promote sustainability at Northwestern. As leaders within the environmental and activist community of student groups, they have raised awareness about the negative impacts of the coal and fossil fuel industries. We admire the way they are stimulating meaningful dialogue about the role and responsibility of our university to be a leader in the environmental movement."
